Good hard-crusted bread recipe that doesn’t need a starter?
Mar 28th
I’m looking for a good bread recipe for a bread with a hard crust, like sourdough, but one that doesn’t require a starter because I’m too impatient, and with as many people as there are in the house I don’t think leaving something sitting like that for days would be a good idea.
I have a bread machine, but I’d also really love a bread I can cook free and round on my pizza stone.

I’ve just finished my first loaf of bread and I love it. I’m confused as to how and when I will be able to make my next loaf.
This part confuses me:
Preserving the Starter: Each time you remove a portion of the starter for a recipe, reserve at least 1/4 cup and replace the amount you have taken out with equal amounts of flour and water.
For example, if you remove 1 cup of starter, you must replace it with 1 cup of flour and 1 cup of warm water. Whisk these ingredients into the starter until blended but not completely smooth, cover loosely, and return to the refrigerator.
I understand it , and I removed 1 1/2 cups starter for my bread and replaced just like it said above.
My main question is by reading that recipe I can’t figure out if when I get ready to make my next loaf I need to let this starter set out at room temp or just take what I need to make my bread and replace with what I take
How can I make this bread recipe less crumbly?
Mar 28th
When I make it, it tastes great but is so crumbly that it is hard to make sandwiches with. I end up having to cut the slices really thick so that they don’t fall apart. What can I do to make it not so crumbly and more like store bought bread? From
http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/honey-oatmeal-bread-ii/Detail.aspx:
Ingredients
2 cups boiling water
1 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup honey
2 tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons salt
1 (.25 ounce) package + ½ teaspoon active dry yeast
1/2 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
3cups bread flour
1 cup whole wheat floud
2 tablespoons honey, warmed slightly
2 tablespoons rolled oats
Directions
In a large mixing bowl, combine boiling water, oats, 1/2 cup honey, butter and salt. Let stand for 1 hour.
In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.
Pour the yeast mixture into the oat mixture. Add 2 cups of flour; mix well. Stir in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, beating well after each addition. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 20 minutes. Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal pieces and form into loaves. Place the loaves into two lightly greased 9×5 inch loaf pans. Cover the loaves with a damp cloth and let rise until doubled in volume, about 40 minutes. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for about 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the bottom of the loaf sounds hollow when tapped. Remove loaves from pans, brush tops of loaves with 2 tablespoons honey and sprinkle with oats.
recipe for a “toastmaster breadbox” (bread machine model 1172) anyone?
Mar 28th
I got the machine 2nd hand and have no manuel – I don’t want one I just need a recipe & I will go from there. The thing is I don’t know if it makes a 1.5 lb loaf or 2 lb so I don’t know which recipe to use. Thank you in advance for your help. Even if you have no recipe do you know what size loaf this machine makes?
Thanks anyway Miss Libby I don’t want a manual (or a manuel lol ooops!) really just trying to connect with someone who might have the same machine & some info re: the machine capacity & loaf size. I can start with a 1 lb loaf and go from there.
Thanks again.
