Freshly baked bread is one of the most comforting aromas I can think of. Unfortunately, not everyone can bake fresh bread to a point of perfection. If you are looking for a surefire way to put your bread machine to good use, you have come to the right place. No more wasted bread, no more beautiful crust and hollow inside; just good ole’ fashioned homemade bread you can be proud of.
We have compiled some of the best homemade bread baking tips in a bread machine we could find on the internet. These tips have been tried and put to the real test, coming through with flying colors that would make even Grandma proud.
1. Get to know your machine. This might sound odd, but knowing the settings, times and cycles of your bread machine is one of the key elements to making great tasting homemade bread.
2. Check the consistency of your bread dough after 7-8 minutes to ensure it is correct. If it appears to be too dry you can add 1 tsp. of water to it at a time and allow your machine to work the water into it. Repeat if necessary. If it is too moist you can add 1 tsp. of flour to it and repeat if necessary.
3. Set the controls on your bread machine to match the type of bread you are making.
4. Pay attention to the beeps. The beeps are letting you know one cycle is done. This is when you add extra ingredients before the bread begins to cook.
If you don’t have a recipe of your own to follow you can always look on the internet for one. You can find homemade bread recipes for all types of bread from flavored breads to whole wheat and oat breads. You don’t have to be a professional baker to make great bread. All you have to have is a great recipe to follow and then add your own modifications to it to make it your own.
It might take a few times for you to get the recipe exactly the way you want it, but it will be well worth it once you master it. It is important that you take notes of all the modifications you make so once you have the perfect recipe you can duplicate it.

If you’ve never used a bread maker you may have a few questions about making bread in a bread machine. Some common questions include: Is it hard to use? What’s with all the settings and choices? What ingredients will I need? Do all my measurements have to be precise? Today I’ll try to address some of these questions for you.
Is it hard to use?
Making bread in a bread machine is relatively easy once you get the hang of it. It really consists of measuring and placing the ingredients in the baking pan, setting the desired baking mode, removing the baking pad, and removing the bread.
One of the benefits of owning a bread machine is its ease of use. It takes away all the hard work of actually making bread from scratch leaving you more time to actually enjoy it.
What’s with all the settings and choices?
Depending on the bread machine you might have a few settings or a great deal of them. These settings allow for the different types of bread to be made. You can also set timers to delay baking so you can have a loaf ready for you at a specific time.
Most models are able to do a variety of bread types; just about all of them allow you to make dough; some can do jam and the Zojirushi BB-CEC20 can even bake meatloaf.
What ingredients will I need?
Although many options are available for making bread in a bread machine there’s some basic ingredients you’re going to keep using. Ingredients like:
Yeast
Flour
Gluten
Sugar
Salt
Butter
Dairy
Eggs
If you’re making gluten free bread then you would not use gluten and the recipe will be slightly different. Many other ingredients, such as fruits, grains and nuts can be used but this all depends on the recipe.
Do all my measurements need to be precise?
If you read the manuals that come with a bread machine they will tell you to follow the recipe exactly as stated. The same goes for bread making recipe books. This makes sense if you’re concerned about consistency and reliability in your baking.
Once people become more experienced however many of them began to try variations on the measurements. Be cautious if you plan on doing this as you’re bound to have some failures in the beginning. Just keep this in mind and you can have a lot of fun being creative.
Common Questions
As you can see making bread in a bread machine is easy and the settings are designed to give you access to different bread, dough, and additional food options. Some basic ingredients are always used but you can also add fruits, nuts, and grains depending on the recipe. Your measurements should be precise but don’t be afraid to experiment after you get the hang of it.

10 Steps to Making Bread in a Bread Machine

If you don’t own a bread machine you might be wondering if it requires a lot of effort. What I’ve done is put together 10 easy steps to show you a typical experience baking bread using a bread maker. Hopefully this gives you a feel for what you’ll to be doing once you get yourself one.
1. Wash your hands
The first thing you want to do is wash your hands and clean your area. You don’t want to make yourself sick, and you don’t want undesirable substances (hair, other food, etc) in your bread.
2. Get out your measuring spoons, cups, etc.
Its best to prepare before you get started. Get out your measuring cup and a measuring tablespoon. Have all these clean and available to you to prepare ingredients.
3. Prepare your ingredients
It’s best to have everything measured before you start dumping items into the bread machine. Now some people just do this as they go along, just like with any other recipe, so this is entirely up to you.
4. Wipe clean inside of bread pan
You want to wipe clean the inside of the bread pan. You might have dust or old bread material from a previous baking experience. Just take a wet cloth or paper towel and wipe it clean.
5. Place liquids in first
You can use whatever water you want, but for the best tasting bread I’d recommend using purified, bottled, or filtered water. Tap water often contains chlorine, and other chemicals which could influence the taste of the bread. This is of course depended on thoughts on purified water but it does make a difference.
You want to also place eggs, melted butter, or whatever other liquids you want to use. In terms of butter make sure its cooled before you place in the pan to avoid affecting the yeast.
6. Place dry ingredients into pan
Now you want to place the dry ingredients in the pan. If you already have everything measured out in bowls this should be an easy step. Just put everything in one at a time. In regards to fruit, nuts and grains, many bread machines have timers to tell you when it’s appropriate to add them in. If yours does not you want to wait until the dough has formed before you add these ingredients.
7. Insert yeast
Next you want to add the yeast. Make sure the yeast does not get wet before it’s added or you will waste the batch. One bread maker that handles yeast differently is the Panasonic SD-YD250. This bread machine actually has a yeast dispenser which drops the yeast into the batch at the perfect time. Unfortunately most models don’t have this feature so you will have to drop the yeast right after the dry ingredients.
8. Place pan inside of machine
Nest you want to place the pan inside the machine. Make sure it’s secure and then shut the lid.
9. Set the Timer and bake the bread
Once the lid is closed plug in the bread machine if its not already plugged in and turn on the timer or select a program/cycle. The many options depends on what bread machine you have, what type of bread you want to make, and if you are using a custom program. Now your ready to bake!
10. Remove bread from bread maker and enjoy
Once bread has finished baking, let the machine sit for about an hour to cool down then open the lid. Take the pan out and attempt to slide the bread out into a plate. Slice the bread and use saran wrap to keep it fresh. Since bread machine bread has no preservatives it tends to go bad sooner so its best to either eat it within 3-4 days or freeze the bread.

After taking a look a look at the steps involved you can see how accessible it is to make bread using a bread machine. It basically comes down to: cleaning, getting out measuring tools, placing ingredients inside the pan, dumping in the ingredients, baking, and removing the bread.
With all the different types of bread available, from delicious banana bread, to sour dough, and fruit and nut variations, baking bread is easy and delicious.

Are bread machines worth buying? That really depends on the person. While there are many advantages of owning a quality bread maker, you have to ask yourself if you are really going to use it? All to often people buy products on the spur of the moment, and while the may use them a few times, the novelty wears off and the machine ends up sitting on a lonely shelf in the pantry.
However, this shouldn’t be a deterrent for buying one of these wonderful products. There are many joys and advantageous to owning a bread machine. Making a Thanksgiving Cornucopia

Also called a Horn of Plenty, the cornucopia has evolved into a iconic symbol of Thanksgiving and abundance. The original ancient Greek cornucopia was a curved goat’s horn overflowing with fruit and grain It symbolized the horn possessed by Zeus’s nurse, the Greek nymph Amalthaea, which could be filled with whatever the owner wished. Today’s traditional Thanksgiving cornucopias are often filled with a mixture of small pumpkins, gourds and fruits that symbolize the harvest. They are sometimes accented with whole nuts or dried berries, perhaps as a nod to their pilgrim beginnings during the festival of Thanksgiving.
Although Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday, not all of the United States looks exactly the same when celebrating Thanksgiving. While we think of a traditional Thanksgiving as a chilly fall or even winter day, some parts of the country are experiencing balmy weather. We may think of Thanksgiving as a time to cozy up next to a fire wearing our favorite wool sweater, but in some states Thanksgiving revelers get out of their pools to check their turkey on the grill! So why not have your Thanksgiving cornucopia reflect your own personal Thanksgiving celebration?
If you live in California or (or any coastal state that experiences warm weather at Thanksgiving) why not have your cornucopia reflect that? A beautiful cornucopia spilling out citrus fruit would be spectacular. Just round up a selection of your favorite fruits like lemons, limes and oranges. Using small toothpicks you could anchor the fruit to a floral oasis and then to each other to prevent them from rolling out of the basket. Build your cornucopia one piece at a time until you achieve the overflowing look you want. To garnish the arrangement, consider using smaller citrus like kumquats and lemon leaves tucked between the fruit. This will give it a more finished look. One of the benefits of using this kind of centerpiece is that your guests can disassemble it to snack on during or after the big meal!
No one ever said that a Thanksgiving cornucopia had to only be edible. If you live in a warm Southern state there are spectacular flowers that are still in bloom at Thanksgiving time. Consider filling your Thanksgiving cornucopia with a selection of magnolia blossoms, orchids or other indigenous flowers from your area. The effect could be breathtakingly beautiful with a little effort. Just remember the look of a cornucopia is always one that is slightly overfilled.
Creative Southwestern Thanksgiving celebrations have featured cornucopias filled with Native American artifacts (as a nod to some of the first Thanksgiving participants) or even cornucopias filled with red rock and cactus as a reflection of the surrounding landscape. The beauty and ease of this type of cornucopia is that you can fill it with whatever reflects your own personal Thanksgiving celebration.
If you live in the Midwestern States or the “Bread Belt” of the country, consider making a Thanksgiving cornucopia that reflects that. Using frozen bread dough shaped over a colander, you can form the horn of plenty. Bake following the package directions and then fill your cornucopia with dinner rolls your guests can eat during the Thanksgiving meal!
By using a little creativity and whatever you have on hand, you can put together a very special Thanksgiving cornucopia that is a reflection of your own personal gratitude. And isn’t that really what Thanksgiving is all about?

Also called a Horn of Plenty, the cornucopia has evolved into a iconic symbol of Thanksgiving and abundance. The original ancient Greek cornucopia was a curved goat’s horn overflowing with fruit and grain It symbolized the horn possessed by Zeus’s nurse, the Greek nymph Amalthaea, which could be filled with whatever the owner wished. Today’s traditional Thanksgiving cornucopias are often filled with a mixture of small pumpkins, gourds and fruits that symbolize the harvest. They are sometimes accented with whole nuts or dried berries, perhaps as a nod to their pilgrim beginnings during the festival of Thanksgiving.
Although Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday, not all of the United States looks exactly the same when celebrating Thanksgiving. While we think of a traditional Thanksgiving as a chilly fall or even winter day, some parts of the country are experiencing balmy weather. We may think of Thanksgiving as a time to cozy up next to a fire wearing our favorite wool sweater, but in some states Thanksgiving revelers get out of their pools to check their turkey on the grill! So why not have your Thanksgiving cornucopia reflect your own personal Thanksgiving celebration?
If you live in California or (or any coastal state that experiences warm weather at Thanksgiving) why not have your cornucopia reflect that? A beautiful cornucopia spilling out citrus fruit would be spectacular. Just round up a selection of your favorite fruits like lemons, limes and oranges. Using small toothpicks you could anchor the fruit to a floral oasis and then to each other to prevent them from rolling out of the basket. Build your cornucopia one piece at a time until you achieve the overflowing look you want. To garnish the arrangement, consider using smaller citrus like kumquats and lemon leaves tucked between the fruit. This will give it a more finished look. One of the benefits of using this kind of centerpiece is that your guests can disassemble it to snack on during or after the big meal!
No one ever said that a Thanksgiving cornucopia had to only be edible. If you live in a warm Southern state there are spectacular flowers that are still in bloom at Thanksgiving time. Consider filling your Thanksgiving cornucopia with a selection of magnolia blossoms, orchids or other indigenous flowers from your area. The effect could be breathtakingly beautiful with a little effort. Just remember the look of a cornucopia is always one that is slightly overfilled.
Creative Southwestern Thanksgiving celebrations have featured cornucopias filled with Native American artifacts (as a nod to some of the first Thanksgiving participants) or even cornucopias filled with red rock and cactus as a reflection of the surrounding landscape. The beauty and ease of this type of cornucopia is that you can fill it with whatever reflects your own personal Thanksgiving celebration.
If you live in the Midwestern States or the “Bread Belt” of the country, consider making a Thanksgiving cornucopia that reflects that. Using frozen bread dough shaped over a colander, you can form the horn of plenty. Bake following the package directions and then fill your cornucopia with dinner rolls your guests can eat during the Thanksgiving meal!
By using a little creativity and whatever you have on hand, you can put together a very special Thanksgiving cornucopia that is a reflection of your own personal gratitude. And isn’t that really what Thanksgiving is all about?

Making Muffins and Crumpets

Sift through the sieve 4 lbs. of good Hungarian flour; take as much water and milk as will make the above into a nice-sized batter, having previously dissolved 2 ozs. of yeast, 1 oz. of sugar, and 3/4 oz. of salt in the liquid; then beat this well with your hand for at least ten minutes; after it has half risen in your pan beat again for other ten minutes; then let it stand till ready, which you will know by the batter starting to drop. Have one of your roll-boards well dusted with sifted flour, and with your hand lay out the muffins in rows. The above mixture should produce 24 muffins. Then, with another roll-board slightly dusted with rice flour, take the muffins and with your fingers draw the outsides into the centre, forming a round cake; draw them into your hand and brush off any flour that may be adhering to them; place them on the board dusted with rice, and so on till all are finished; then put them in the prover to prove, which does not take long. The heat of the liquid for muffins (or crumpets) should range from 90° to 100° Fahr., according to the temperature of the bake house.
One great point to guard against in fermenting cakes or bread, is to see that your sponge or dough does not get chilled. By the time your muffins are ready, have the stove or hot plate properly heated, then row them gently on to the hot plate so as not to knock the proof out of them; when they are a nice brown turn them gently on the other side and bake a nice delicate brown.
Another Way
Some persons now make muffins after the same formula as for teacakes, namely, moulding one in each hand and pinning out the size required, then proving and baking. I have tried that way more than once, but I cannot get the muffins to appear anything like what my experience teaches me a muffin should be. Practice and judgment are required to make one proficient in muffin making. There has recently been introduced to the trade a hot plate heated with gas, which will go a long way in helping the muffin-maker. It is both cleaner, handier, and you can bake with it to a more certain degree of heat.
Crumpets
Crumpets are generally made by muffin-makers, the most modern formula being the following: — Take 4 lbs. of good English flour, 2. ozs. of good yeast, and 2 ozs. of salt. The flour and salt may be sifted together. Take 1 quart of milk, and 1 1/2 quarts of water, at about 100° Fahr.; dissolve your yeast in the water, then mix in your flour and salt; make all into a thin liquid paste, giving it a thoroughly good mixing; let it stand for one hour, when you may again give it a thoroughly good beat; let it stand for another hour, when it will be ready to bake off. In the meantime thoroughly clean your stove or hot plate before it gets hot, and give it a rub over with a greasy cloth; then have your rings of the size required (they should be half an inch in depth); slightly grease them, and see that they are greased for each round of the hot plate; have a cup in one hand and a saucer in the other to prevent the batter dropping; pour half a cup of the batter into the rings and spread them with a palette knife to a level surface, putting what comes off (if any) back into your pan. Then, when the bottom part is of a nice golden color, turn them over with your palette knife, turning the ring at the same time, and bake off a nice color. Remove them from the stove or hot plate, and lay them on clean boards for a couple of minutes, when with a gentle tap your rings will come clear; and so on till finished. Nothing but careful practice, and particular attention to the whys and wherefores of both hot plates and batter,” will make a good muffin or crumpet-maker.

Recipes in Making Different Types of Buns

Take plain bun dough (or if for common buns, bread dough), roll it out in a sheet, break some firm butter in small pieces and place over it, roll it out as you would paste; after you have given it two or three turns, moisten the surface of the dough, and strew over it some moist sugar; roll up the sheet into a roll, and cut it in slices; or cut the dough in strips of the required size and turn them round; place on buttered tins having edges, half-an-inch from each. Prove them well, and bake in a moderate oven. They may be dusted with loaf sugar either before or after they are baked. The quantity of ingredients used must be regulated by the required richness of the buns. 1/2 lb. of butter, 1/2 lb. of sugar, with 4 lb. of dough, will make a good bun. When bun dough is used, half the quantity of sugar will be sufficient; some omit it altogether.
Balmoral Cakes
3 1/2 lbs. of flour, 1 lb. of butter, 1 lb. of sugar, 5 eggs, nearly 1 quart of milk, a few caraway seeds, with 1 1/2 oz. of carbonate of soda and tartaric acid, mixed in proportion of 1 oz. of soda to 3/4 oz. of acid. Mix the soda and acid well with the flour, then rub in the butter and sugar; make a bay with the flour, add the seeds, beat up the eggs with the milk, and make all into a dough. Put into buttered pans according to the size; dust with castor sugar, and bake in a moderate oven.
Balloon or Prussian Cakes
Take currant bun dough and make it into a round flat cake of any required size, and place it on a buttered tin. When it is about half proved, divide it with a long, flat piece of wood having a thin graduated edge, into eight equal parts, and place it again to prove. When it is proved enough, brush over the top lightly with the white of an egg well whisked, dust it with fine powdered sugar and sprinkle it with water, just sufficient to moisten the sugar. Bake it in a rather cool oven to prevent the icing getting too much colored.
Saffron Buns
Take the same mixture as for teacakes, add 1 oz. of caraway seeds, and color it with saffron. Mould them round, and put them on the tins so as not to touch. When they are near proof, wash the tops with egg and milk, and dust them with castor sugar. Put them in the oven to finish proving, and bake them in a moderately hot oven.
Cinnamon Buns
Made same way as saffron buns, but leaving out the caraway seeds and saffron, and using instead sufficient ground cinnamon to flavor them.
Jubilee Buns
2 lbs. of flour, 3/4 lb. of butter, 3/4 lb. of sugar, 4 eggs, 1/2 oz. of voil. Rub the butter in with the flour, make a bay and add the sugar, pound the salt in a little milk and pour it in, break the eggs, and mix all together into a dough. Make six buns out of 1 lb. of dough, mould them round, wash the top with eggs, put some currants on the top, and dust with sugar.
German Buns
4 lbs. of flour, 2 ozs. of tartar, 1 oz. of carbonate of soda, 12 ozs. of butter, 1 1/2 lbs. of sugar, 4 eggs, 10 drops of essence of lemon, with milk.
Mix tartar and carbonate of soda with the flour, make a sprint or bay, put butter and sugar in bay, cream; add eggs, then milk, make all into a dough, and size them off on buttered tins one inch apart. Wash over with egg, and put a little sugar on top, and bake in a moderate oven.
Common German Buns (for wholesale purposes)
4 lbs. of flour, 2 ozs. of tartar, 1 oz. of carbonate of soda, lb. of lard, 1 1/2 lb. of moist sugar, a little turmeric and churned milk; then proceed as for best German buns. Bake in a sharp oven.
London Buns
Take 1 pint of milk warmed in a basin, add 2 ozs. of yeast, 8 ozs. of moist sugar, and make a dough with sufficient flour.
When the sponge is ready add 12 ozs. of butter, a pinch of salt, and have ready 4 ozs. of chopped peel. Mix all in the dough with 2 eggs and lemon, and prove. When about half proved wash over with yolk of egg. Put sugar on top when full proved.
